send in the FEDS well… navy anyway

I had some weird things happening whilst doing some design work tonight (in firefox), I switched across to IE and it stalled – note the IP:

spies in the navy

I used who.is to check the domain was google (in case of spyware had snuck in somehow) and found this:

# ARIN WHOIS database, last updated 2009-03-09 19:10
# Enter ? for additional hints on searching ARIN’s WHOIS database.

Now that weirded me out.

So I ran a tracert to see what showed up and that was clear, I googled the base above (it’s a biggy btw – the Commander Navy Installation Command).

Closed IE, had a glass of water… got a bit paranoid… then confused – were they looking at me, or was it some weird anomaly?

Went back to do a tracert to my server and it was normal…

reloaded IE and FF – both worked as normal… by my maths the whole thing from first noticing weirdness to ti not seeming to happen anymore took about 30mins.

PLEASE can anyone tell me wtf (sorry mum, but its a def. wtf moment) this was all about?

So, feds, Mi5, spooks, navy – if you want to ask me something, please do so.

If it’s a weird net anomaly, bleedin nora – spooky as heck.

I need some herbal tea now.

engagement good faking bad

Mr Sockpuppet (aka Cllr Grower) has been cleared by the standards board, over the sockpuppet issue.

The Standards Board for England found he had not broken the council’s code of conduct as he was not acting for the authority when posting the messages.

The board noted: “The code of conduct applies to members when they conduct the business of their authority.

“In writing under another name for a newspaper Councillor Ben Grower was not conducting the business of his authority or office.”

How is commenting on council projects, by a councillor on a public forum… such as the echo website NOT conducting the business of his authority or office?

Is that to say he could leave racist, or other hate speech online under a pseudonym and that would be ok? Surely not.

Irrespective of the findings, he is a fool. If you are any kind of public figure and you engage with the public in any means you should be accountable for that.

It almost makes me want to write to the councillor and offer him some free training.

Engagement online, 2 points – faking it -10 points.

Wedding Photos!

So the wedding was groovy, lovely day, very individual wedding, had a look round and here are the photo galleries I know about:

Mark + Clare Conningsby’s photo galleries: one, two and three

Mick Richardson’s Pics

Tom Martin’s photos

Lucy Hewitt’s mostly wedding photos (and us in the black mountains on sunday)

William Remlap’s pictures

and my, random photos from the weekend (not so wedding-y)

If you know of any more please let me know!

UPDATE: It looks like Facebook are not letting non-users see global galleries any more – I know they updated their T+Cs last week but I hadn’t realised that was part of it – I guess if you’re a non facebooker then you’d need to sign up to see them – sorry.

just like buses

I was thinking last night, about how much the Bournemouth web/creative/geek scene (for want of a better phrase) is accelerating at the moment.

Within the last year (and please comment to correct/update me) Bournemouth has gained:

dotdorset

Dorset Digital

startup-meetup

Bar Camp Bournemouth

meetdraw

There’s also more arts focussed groups like, Bomo Creatives (which have been around a bit longer) and other business networking places.

Do we need all of these?

They fulfill slightly different niches but would Bournemouth as an area benefit from all the organisers coming together for the common good? I think it would.

Your thoughts please.

UPDATE: and BUNIX – thanks to @darkphnx

what if twitter

started charging to sign up?

Part of the value in Twitter for a user is the ability to communicate with a wider circle of influence than you might otherwise of been able, as the masses join twitter the danger is that the noise to signal ratio increases making it less useful – but what if they’d started charging when they hit a certain number of users?

Would it start to make some real money that so far it has only hinted at being able to earn? Would people of left the service for another? Certainly charging existing users, would create a mass exodus… but some of the attraction for early adopters is the exclusive club feel – that would be, in some ways, amplified.

This is a very hypothetical post btw – it came from being asked why twitter was anything more than “the next big thing” – in their words, “it was all about friends reunited, then myspace, then facebook… now everyones joining twitter – its just another fad, I’m not signing up”.

That conversation led me to the thought above and also to wonder, what’s the next big thing?

What if twitter IS just a fad?

Some people lose a lot of money, the cool kids move on, the spammers and randomness takes over – this is based on what some people would perceive happened to myspace as a platform, although I would argue its reverted back to its “native” state of being a good place for bands/musicians/DJs/performers.

So what do you think?

Is it a fad?

If so, what’s next?
