some faith restored

“Rev.” Phelps (from the westboro baptist church) and his daughter were banned from the uk and in the end only ONE protester showed up to the theatre in basingstoke… and was fairly rapidly despatched by the counter protest of around 50.

See BBC news

I’m still appalled that Geert Wilders was banned from entering the country for a rational discussion, the video is controversial but its hardly hate speech in that it doesn’t promote violence or action against Muslims it just questions if Islam is a peaceful religion… albeit by interspersing carefully selected passages from the Qur’an.

And for the record, its ok by me to criticise fiction in any case, yeah fiction.

twitter favourites

A great tip for sharing the wheat and not the chaff from your twitter feed is to make use of the favourites feed – anything of interest I see on twitter, I’ll click the star to add it to my favourites.
My favourites are then published as an RSS feed, which I’ve added to the side of my blog under my twitter updates – have a look, you’ll find some interesting stuff.

I’ll add to this post a diagram of how all my RSS/twitter stuff floats around the interwebs later

software to save money

I was talking to a non-techy friend last night and he asked me how I could afford to set-up an office and buy the software/hardware I needed to get going in the current climate.

As promised J here are my top 5 tips for cutting costs (thought I’d share it with everyone):

1) Phones: He uses just a mobile at around £70pm – I use VOIPfone £10pm inc 0845 number

2) Photo/graphic work: Photoshop CS4 £450 – the excellent Gimphoto £0

3) MS Office + Outlook £499 – Open office and Thunderbird £0

4) Project management software? I use the self hosted Taskfreak to manage my to do list, it allows me to share with others too, especially when combined with…

5) Google docs

£1700+ saved in one post, winner.

If you’ve not used these tools, I can’t recommend them highly enough

As for the office, its a hot desking environment shared with 2 others, my furniture, renovated PC and other bits have come to £135 in total.

When slogans become memes

When slogans become memes

memes – explained

I love how things grab people’s attention and twist and change into new forms so rapidly on the web.

The iconic 3 colour picture of Obama led to a website allowing you to obama-ize your own picture (US spelling intended Sarah)…

The humanist bus adverts in London went from:

humanism slogan

(as a response to Christian adverts linked to a website that promised non-Christians an eternity of torment in a lake of fire – see orig article here)

To a T-shirt like this:

raving no god

And now a Bus Advert slogan generator, which produces ones like this:

moon and buildings

Quite controversial, but I’m more amused by how these ideas take on a life of their own, far beyond the original idea.

Incidentally, Christian groups are launching bus ads stating that “there definitely is a god..” which, unless they have some proof, is surely against the ASA code?

I’m amused by it all.
