Traffic meltdown…
I can’t help but feel Bournemouth is about to collapse under the shear volume of traffic.
Look around, next time you’re in downtown Bournemouth.. or ashley road… castle lane… charminster… winton… wallisdown… it’s grinding towards gridlock!
Got me thinking, why is this?
“public transport is poor” – actually, its not. You can easily get a train or coach further afield and locally we’ve got a good selection of buses that run past midnight and start around 6am… whenever I’ve challenged anyone who says this, when they last used a bus… the answer is always… “um.. well, I think I used one 3 years ago when my car broke and…”
“public transport costs too much and is full of cackers/pikeys/wierdos” – again rubbish. Add in the depreciation of your car, petrol, mot, tax and maintenance like tyres… I’ve saved a packet getting rid of my car and using a hire car on the rare occasions nothing else will get me from a to b.
The main reason I think is convenience, or lets be honest… laziness.
It’s easy to convince yourself you have to use a car to get everywhere, but isn’t part of that your choice to use things further afield? To live a greater distance from work… to choose to use a gym thats miles away to get fit, when running that many miles would acheive the same aim… to shop at a huge store, where you have to drive, when you could use online shopping or a local vendor.
Good old human nature, I bet everyone agrees that someone else needs to fix it.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some eco-warrior who expects the world to use public transport and nothing else, but honestly we need to do something soon – Polution affect our health and the environment, dependence on oil makes the world a dangerous place… and by the way, it will run out in our lifetime.
Interesting to see that the streets around my flat are mysteriously growing parking meters (I swear they actually grow out of the ground)… good old council logic, fix the symptoms not the problem, tax it, shut it or make it wider… god forbid they might actually do something constructive like build a monorail!
Well, sir, there’s nothing on earth Like a genuine, Bona fide, Electrified, Six-car Monorail! Sing it with me – Monorail, Monorail, Monorail!
monorail, monorail… monorail!!! I should of expected a simpsons quote really! In all seriousness, they are proposing a monorail, from the beach, via the square, railway station and hospital up to the airport. Woooooooo! Monorail!
