BBQ’s and Mexican Jumping Beans!

BBQ’s… well, I guess its kinda officially summer… I’ve been to 2 BBQs and didn’t get rained on once, I didn’t get a suntan, but hey, I’m not complaining!

After consuming plenty of alcohol (2 pints of strongbow and about 1/2 litre of vodka – oops) we discovered a packet of mexican jumping beans in my friends flat… wow!

First off, I have to explain the mystery that is the mexican jumping bean… it’s a bug inside a bean, it lives in there and jumps around making the bean move. After watching the packet for 5 mins, we were convinced they were dead, or a hoax… or something along those lines.

Imagine our excitment when they reacted to music and started moving….

Mexican Jumping Beans – dancin’!!
Mexican Jumping Beans - dancin'

So of course we then had to test these athletes further with a race… i won’t upload the whole 5 min file, but if you want to see it catch me out n about… it’s on my mobile… here’s a teaser of where it went after some more drinks…

Mexican Jumping Beans – under starters orders…
Mexican Jumping Beans - racing!

oh dear… well, I laughed so hard tears were streaming down my face… I guess you had to be there!

Maybe I won’t drink much tonight…

One final mystery… on the packet it states they are “non toxic and non edible” – How is that possible??

The big tip con!

Credit card tipping, the great con!

Undercover sources working for aLUKEonLIFE can exclusively reveal a scandalous con occuring in bars and restaurants around the uk.

Tips (or gratuities if you’re a posh one) left for staff on credit cards, don’t normally reach the staff. We have first hand evidence that in some chains, the tips don’t go to staff at all and in others, the money from credit card tips is used to pay wages!

Spread the word, always tip in cash… otherwise you’re just giving your money to the restaurant/bar and not the staff.

chicken + egg theory – more proof!

I know you all think I’m bonkers with my insistance that the egg came first from two “non-chickens” in the age old dilemma:

“which came first the chicken or the egg?”

So I was most pleased to see this today, and felt I had to share it with you all….

In nature, living things evolve through changes in their DNA. In an animal like a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell and a female ovum meet and combine to form a zygote — the first cell of a new baby chicken. This first cell divides innumerable times to form all of the cells of the complete animal. In any animal, every cell contains exactly the same DNA, and that DNA comes from the zygote.

Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote. These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created. That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken.

Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal, and the zygote cell is housed in the chicken’s egg. So, the egg must have come first.

Ministry of Sound

I’d forgotten how much fun a clubbing road-trip can be… saturday was awesome!

Well, I was planning a quiet weekend, but then within the space of an hour I’d been offered a lift to ministry and guest list… seemed rude not to… especially as the very talented Jon Gurd was playing..

The whole thing was just good clean fun, first stop southampton to redezvous with the rest of the gang, couple of drinks then onwards… as expected, a toilet stop and random purchases from the services… couple of minor wrong turns (“just stay on the A3″… “which A3?” haha) good old boogie till about 5am.

Best sets for me were Electric Press, who are playing in Bournemouth next month, and Jon Gurd.

Trundle back via the legendary fleet services to an after party in Bournemouth, spin some tunes… drink a bit more, arrive home 12 to a cup of earl grey… and pass out.

Busy weekend coming up, Slam on friday and Censo sunday (email me for guesty)! Wooooo!

mystery numbers

I had a text message today from someone stored in my phone as “NYE?”… I like it when mysteries of the universe are solved, like why have I gained a random number on my phone!? Aha, I now know who it is!!

Well… we’ve all done it… gone out, bumped into someone after a few too many lemonades… swapped numbers and then forgotten to save it… looked at your phone the next day and thought… “bugger, who was that?”

Sadly, your memory fails… did you meet Cat Deeley or was it a dream? Did you see the promoter of some huge night in London who wanted a demo? Or maybe one of your mates just changed phone…

If you’re like me, when you discover a random number (be it, one you stored drunk, or an unknown missed call) you then store it with some piece of info, in my phone I have:

NYE?
unknown
X Friend (usefull, at least I know who they know… if not their name!)
Random Cat (although I’m pretty sure this is my long term stalker, who randomly sends me pictures of cats – yeah I know, strange eh?)
Maison Bloke (good one Luke, someone you met at maison… that narrows it down!!!)
and, er…
Mystery Blonde (hahaha – ahem… :D )

Conscientiousness

No, I’m not just showing off with long fancy words… I just couldn’t think of another title!

The internet… fascinating thing, full of endless possibilities to improve the world we live in, to share ideas and bla bla bla… yeah you know.

I was reading some comments on a web site yesterday and something struck me, there is 1 key skill/trait that is essential for survival on the internet… conscientiousness!

Being aware that anyone can write pretty much anything, means to find the really good bit of information… to work out whats really going on… to make sense of the madness… requires you to think about who, why, when, where, what and how everything becomes that which you see on screen.

Let me give an example, 2 people fall out:

Mr X goes online and accuses Mr Y of something, some people read it and think “well, this guy seems real, must be true”, some read it and think “nah this guys full of rubbish”… I (and I hope I’m not alone) read it and thought “why is this person saying this, is it true? whats the other side of the story?”

Turned out X & Y had fallen out, looks to me like what X was saying was utterly lacking in truth… but still fascinating to see how many people read it as geniune at first… if Mr Y hadn’t seen the comment, people might of been left thinking it was true.

Now, I know rumours n accusations are nothing new… but consider this… 3 days after it was posted 416 people were watching (ie notified when updated) and the page had over 5000 reads… in 3 days!

I dunno what I’m wittering about now, but the whole thing really made me think about how you are perceived online and the responsibility you have to be conscientious in your reactions, thoughts and actions.

Innocent until proven guilty… false until proven true… impartial until considered in detail… suspicious until proven safe… thats my moto for today!
