Babies…

First off a huge CONGRATULATIONS to my cousin Richard and his significant other Katherine, who are now the proud parents of Benjamin. All the best guys!

…thats where it all gets scary… my family is very regimented into generations… this is the first child from my generation… ut oh… add into that another cousin getting married this year… cue broody relatives and their ever so helpful comments:

“When I was your age I had 2 kids…”
(yeah great… well done! …what do you want a medal? Some lovin’d be nice for starters…)

“why don’t you have a nice young lady in your life?”
(Pffft… cheers gran, if I knew the answer to that one, you wouldn’t need to ask the question!)

“Are you scared of commitment? Did that stalker girl put you off women?”
(Er no, to be scared of commitment would mean managing to go out with someone for longer than say, I dunno a few months! Nope, not even got close to that one)

“Well, you young folks are all career minded, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a family you know!”
(to be honest… I think this one is a thinly veiled remix of: “so what are you actually doing these days…?” - no I don’t want a normal job thanks)

Bleurgh

I’m quite happy most the time, but when I’ve got a lot on… the cashflows tight… and I feel like I’m fighting the world one handed… its hard not to take a knock… the mind plays tricks on you… “maybe life would be easier, if I just got a 9-5 and settled down a bit…”

hmmmm

Then I give myself a slap, dust myself off and carry onwards…

Hmmm too much?

I sat down today and worked out all the things I need to do, so I could sort them into some sort of order and make sure I get it all done… YIKES!

By the end of the week I will of:
- set up a Ltd company and become Chairman
- instigated legal action against the managing agent for my block of flats
- made a load more re-edits, ready for warming up at 2manydj’s/soulwax on wed
- played gigs, wed/thurs/fri in Bournemouth and then headed up north for sat!
- completed 2 websites
- re-submitted my tax return for 04-05 (don’t ask… grrr)

so if I forget to be somewhere, reply to something or otherwise mess up this week, I’m sorry!

bye bye liver!

UPDATE: It gets worse… it opens (selling alcohol) from 7am on a sunday… which is the point we normally run out… oh dear!

Biscuit or cake?

In other news… apparently the difference between a biscuit and a cake is that when a biscuit goes out of date it gets softer where as a cake gets harder.

Cool…. is that true???

Responsibilamondo?

Why is it, we seem to be taking increasingly LESS responsibility for our actions?

If I choose to get on my moutain bike and hurtle down a hill… I accept responsibility for any injuries I inccur… I choose to ride down the hill. Sure, if someone put an obstacle intentionally in my path, that entire responsibility changes, but I still have to accept that my choice affected my outcome.

If I drive a car over the speed limit, I’m taking a risk… an increased chance of collision, a chance of a speeding ticket, fine or ban… my choice, my responsibility.

If I eat mcDonalds (or other fast food junk) for every meal and don’t exercise ever… I know I’ll get fat and affect my health.

If I go out and drink too much (far fetched I know… :) ) I’m accepting that some things are now more likely (I’m twice as likely to be the victim of a violent assault, 7% more likely to be mugged… etc - figures from Dorset Police).

Life is about balancing and managing risk, don’t you think?

So why is it that we seem to be increasingly legislating that if you go out and get drunk, you no longer have to accept that whatever happens is partly your fault for choosing to get drunk and put yourself into that situation?

Changing the onus on rape cases from “beyond reasonable doubt” to “proof that the woman consented” is a dangerous step, of course I think it’s very important that women (and men, I’ve heard of a viagra spiked rape that never went to the police) are protected… I just strongly believe that this is going too far.

And before someone says that I’m disputing the cases where people take advantage of others who are drunk, of course I’m not, I just think this step to resolve it is the wrong one.

Take risks, take the responsibility.
