what is classical?

Today I’ve been listening to a (fairly random) selection of music off my computer (mainly music bought from the fantastic beatport.com)… amongst these pieces of music is the epic genius of Hybrid’s “Finished Symphony”.

Does this mean I like classical music?

Lets look at the evidence…

  1. It’s called “finished symphony
  2. It has a classical style arrangement
  3. The main instruments used are orchestral (strings in particular)

puzzler…. what is “classical” then? Is this not classical because it has a breakbeat pattern?

I’ve never really been one for putting music into genres anyway.

communication

ok, this is getting silly…. think about how crazy this is for a minute…

so far today I’ve communicated with clients/friends using the following methods:

  • Telephone
  • Mobile Phone
  • txt messaging
  • MSN Instant Messaging
  • this Blog
  • email
  • a forum
  • and last but not least… good old snail mail post!

Which only leaves Fax… I do have a fax number, although I can’t remember the last time anyone sent me a fax.

The reason I’m thinking about all this is that I’m looking for a new phone (see yesterdays entry for why!) and I want a decent camera (2 mega pixels at least)… which puts 3G phones on my horizon for the first time… do I want to add video messaging to my list???

Imagine if I had a business card with all these things on, how ridiculous would that look?

wow! Do I need all of these? How many hours a week do I waste checking them all for messages? (webmail, voicemail, email, forums, blog…. yikes!) It’s really made me think.

what a weekend!

12 hours worth of DJ sets + 15 hours of partying at homelands = 1 exhausted but very happy Luke! (apologies if todays entry is a tad disjointed)

My weekend started with the arrival of my sister who was promptly abducted and taken to Slinky by some of my friends as I had to do the usual 5 hour set at Fruit. Got home went to bed then up and off to homelands at midday…..

Homelands!!!!

I really enjoyed homelands on saturdays night, got to see loads of good acts… my favourite set of the night had to be either The Loose Cannons in the Bacardi Bar, Tiga in Arena 5 or Groove Armada on the outdoor stage. Got to see Mylo, bit disappointed really as he basically just played his album live, no extras and no new tracks.

There were loads of really memorable bits at homelands, being introduced to one of my hero’s (Tom Neville) in the VIP area was very cool (top bloke)… the look on my friends face when I introduced her to Dave Lee (aka Joey Negro – her favourite DJ) was wicked… going on the waltzers whilst quite hammered was an experience… and then looking up to see all my friends looking down at me whilst I was flat on my back is a mental picture I’ll never forget!!!!!!

The only bad bit of the festival was partially breaking my mobile phone which made it hard to meet up with a couple of people who were there… ah well, now I have a good excuse to buy a shiny new gadget, wooooo!!

After about 5 hours sleep (we got back from homelands about 730am) I then had to DJ @ sundays at the terrace… now I’ll be honest with you, the first set (3 1/2hrs) was hard work but by the time it came to play the last hour, I was more alive and thanks to a legendary set from Dave C & Dave James (cheers guys!) the crowd was going for it, which always gives you a buzz.

Sadly today, the curse of the self employed strikes again… spent some time with my sister but now I have some work to finish for a client by tommorow morning. On the plus side though, the next time I have something scheduled in is my radio show on thursday evening :D

It’s all made me realise I really do have a great group of friends, from hanging out n looking after each other at homelands through to people babysitting my sister (although she’s cool so its hardly hard work).

Hope y’all had a good weekend too.

Luck vs Chance

I don’t believe in Luck. I do believe in chance. (Rolling a dice is chance BTW)

I’m often told I’ve been “lucky” when it comes to all kind of aspects in my life. jobs I’ve done, places I’ve been, gigs I’ve played, people I’ve met… rubbish!

Life is what you make it, you too can become lucky, I promise.

Keep your eyes open for opportunity, take a chance, be genuinly warm to everyone you meet, always live so you can say “I tried” and not “what if”. Easy.

There’s a great book I once read on the subject, that totally confirmed my beliefs (or lack of) in the matter: Dr Richard Wiseman “The Luck Factor” (I spotted him after he was on TV, strongly rec. this book to anyone who classifies themselves as “unlucky”!!!)

What bought this up today? 3 people calling me lucky about different aspects of my life – homelands (VIP + free transport :D ), Contracting work (muchos dinero) and a big booking (Animal Windfest ‘05)!

All of these can be traced back to applying the rules above I promise.

Star Wars III

If you’ve not seen this yet, go see it!

What a good film!! I felt it had all the darkness that I loved in Episode V coupled with all the loose ends being tied up and a good amount of light saber action.

My only gripe was R2D2… since when was he able to kick ass? He was always the loveable tech droid who opened doors, operated lifts… all of a sudden he’s kicking droid ass. Hmmm. Thats being quite picky though.

All in all a wicked film, now I’ve gotta wait for the 6DVD boxset… and watch them all in order!

know-it-alls

Lately, I’m becoming paranoid people think I’m some sort of boring know it all.

In the last week, I’ve:

  • done Club DJ gigs & a radio show
  • talked about Drug + Alcohol Misuse
  • consulted for 3 people on eBusiness strategy + online marketing
  • had a couple of Life Coaching clients
  • referenced the psychology of love equity on another blog

I’m also learning spanish, PHP and CSS… my current reading list includes books on neuro-linguistic programming, consultancy, the world debt problem and croatia!

I need to get out more!!!

what’s wrong with me???? I think its an addiction, certainly when I’m not learning anything I get bored incredibly quickly!
